US FDA Removes Coconut from Major Food Allergen List

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has officially removed coconut from its list of tree nuts classified as major food allergens. This marks a significant step forward for the coconut industry, particularly for countries like the Philippines, where coconuts play a vital economic role.

A Win for the Coconut Industry

This change in the FDA’s food allergen guidance is being celebrated as a milestone for the global coconut sector. According to the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), the reclassification will alleviate trade barriers for coconut-based products in the U.S. market and stimulate innovation and demand for coconut-derived goods.

“This decision lifts a long-standing ‘labeling stigma’ that has hindered the market potential of coconut-based products,” the PCA said in a statement. “Brands and manufacturers can now promote coconut items without the misclassification burden that has historically dampened consumer confidence and international trade.”

Details of the FDA Guidance

The guidance document titled “Questions and Answers Regarding Food Allergens, Including the Food Allergen Labeling Requirements of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (Edition 5),” specifies that coconut is no longer considered a major food allergen. Other tree nuts that remain on the FDA’s allergen list include almond, walnut, cashew, hazelnut, macadamia, pistachio, and pecan, among others.

The FDA clarified that tree nuts not backed by a robust body of evidence to support their inclusion as major food allergens should not be listed under the "Contains" statement on food labels, even if used as ingredients. This exclusion ensures a more accurate labeling process, reducing unnecessary consumer confusion.

Implications for Coconut Products

The PCA views this update as an opportunity to boost confidence in coconut products, drive innovation, and expand their market reach. Coconut farmers, processors, and entrepreneurs in coconut-producing nations are expected to benefit significantly from increased trade opportunities and reduced labeling restrictions.

For those in the allergy-safe snack industry, such as No Nuts!, this is a critical development. It opens the door to creating new coconut-based snacks and products without the concern of mislabeling or consumer apprehension.

The FDA’s decision aligns with efforts to refine food allergen classifications and support accurate consumer information. This milestone ensures that coconut products can be marketed globally with fewer restrictions, paving the way for growth and innovation in the coconut industry.
